Delmon Young and Miguel Cabrera homered as the Detroit Tigers kept their bid for home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs alive with a 9-6 victory over the visiting Cleveland Indians on Tuesday.

Wilson Betemit added a solo homer and Magglio Ordonez drove in three for the Tigers, who remained one game behind the Texas Rangers for the second-best record in the American League.

The Rangers routed the Los Angeles Angels 10-3 later Tuesday.

For the second night in a row, Detroit jumped on Cleveland’s starting pitcher early and often. Young and Ordonez drove in runs in a three-run first off Jeanmar Gomez (5-3) and Betemit homered to deep right in the second. It was 6-1 after Young hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

Max Scherzer (15-9) took his final playoff tuneup and coasted through the first three innings before running into trouble. The righthander ended up charged with four runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Cabrera’s 30th homer in the sixth lifted his league-leading batting average to .343.

Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his 48th save for the Tigers, who have put up 23 runs and 30 hits through the first two games of the series.
