Gio Gonzalez allowed just one run over eight innings and broke a personal five-game losing streak as the Oakland Athletics notched a 5-1 victory over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

The All-Star lefthander struck out nine and allowed just four hits and one walk while winning for the first time since July 17 as the Athletics recorded their fourth victory in five games.

The Blue Jays were without major-league home run leader Jose Bautista, who was scratched shortly before the game due to neck tightness. Toronto’s Adam Lind left in the first inning after being hit on the right wrist by Gonzalez (10-11).

Oakland’s go-ahead run scored in the fourth when David DeJesus grounded into a double play.

The Athletics piled on three insurance runs with two out in the eighth. Brandon Allen doubled and scored on Ryan Sweeney’s single and pinch hitter Josh Willingham followed with his 22nd homer of the season.

Toronto’s run crossed on Edwin Encarnacion’s first-inning single. Oakland tied the score in the bottom of the inning on Hideki Matsui’s single.

Blue Jays rookie Henderson Alvarez (0-1) pitched well in his third major-league outing. He gave up two runs (one earned) and seven hits in six innings.
