James Shields went the distance for the 10th time this season, and Evan Longoria homered twice as the Tampa Bay Rays cruised past the host Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 on Friday.

Shields (12-10) frustrated the Jays - and slugger Jose Bautista, in particular - en route to the 15th complete game of his career. The veteran righthander is the first hurler with double-digit complete games in a season since Randy Johnson had 12 for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1999.

He had plenty of help from Longoria, who blasted a pair of solo shots for the eighth multi-homer game of his career. The superstar third baseman has 10 homers and 23 RBIs in August.

Shields finished with 12 strikeouts - three of those courtesy of Bautista, who was tossed by home plate umpire Bill Welke following the third punchout. Bautista was seen shouting something at Welke before getting tossed, and the ejection prompted the reigning major league home run champion to toss a bat, helmet and water bottle on the field in protest.

Shields is the first pitcher to strike Bautista out three times in a game since Seattle's Felix Hernandez did so Sept. 23, 2009.

Henderson Alvarez (0-2) allowed only four hits, but three were home runs. Desmond Jennings and John Jaso also went deep for the Rays, who moved to 7 1/2 games behind the Yankees in the American League wild card race.

Brett Lawrie's fifth homer of the season provided the lone offense for Toronto, which had to do without manager John Farrell. The skipper is suffering from pneumonia and was ordered by doctors to spend at least one game away from the club.
