Felix Hernandez went seven strong innings to help the Seattle Mariners snap a 17-game losing streak with a 9-2 victory over the host New York Yankees on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mariners were four losses shy of tying the American League record for consecutive defeats set by Baltimore in 1988 and two defeats away from having baseball's worst streak since Kansas City lost 19 straight in 2005.

Hernandez (9-9) won for the first time since June 24, allowing one run on five hits to improve to 6-3 lifetime against New York. The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, who had been winless in his last five starts, struck out five and walked four.

Mike Carp went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, including a game-breaking three-run triple in a five-run seventh inning to lift the Mariners to their first win since July 5.

Dustin Ackley had three hits and three RBIs and Ichiro Suzuki added four hits for Seattle, which pounded out 17 hits in winning for the first time in the finale of a nine-game road trip.

Phil Hughes (1-3) allowed two runs on nine hits in six innings to remain winless in four starts at Yankee Stadium.
