Yorvit Torrealba homered and four San Diego pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the host Padres blanked the San Francisco Giants 1-0 on Saturday.
Torrealba hit a one-out opposite-field homer in the third off Madison Bumgarner for the game’s only run. The homer into the short right-field porch was Torrealba’s fifth of the season and helped the Padres regain a one-game lead over the Giants in the National League West standings.
Torrealba was part of a strikeout/caught stealing combo to end the game as Heath Bell struck out Buster Posey and Torrealba gunned out pinch-runner Darren Ford trying to steal second base.
Tim Stauffer (4-3) pitched six innings of three-hit ball in his third start of the season and combined with Luke Gregerson, Mike Adams and Bell on the shutout. Stauffer struck out five and walked two.
Gregerson and Adams each struck out two during perfect innings of relief. Bell worked the ninth for his 40th save of the season and 27th consecutive successful opportunity.
Bumgarner (5-5) gave up one run and three hits in seven innings. He struck out four and didn’t walk anybody.
