Placido Polanco broke a deadlock with single in the 12th inning and the Philadelphia Phillies snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 triumph over the San Diego Padres on Friday.
Polanco capitalized with a base knock off Ernesto Frieri (0-1) that plated Jimmy Rollins for a much-needed victory. The rally moved Philadelphia one-half game clear of San Francisco in the race for the National League wild card.
Chad Durbin (4-1) picked up the win with two innings of relief, taking closer Brad Lidge off the hook. Lidge had balked home Jerry Hairston Jr. with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to force extras.
That spoiled an outstanding effort from Roy Oswalt, who was in line for his fourth consecutive victory after allowing a run on five hits with six strikeouts in eight innings.
Chase Utley opened the scoring in the third with a single up the middle to bring home Rollins. San Diego’s Yorvit Torrealba answered right back in the bottom half by belting a solo homer to even things at 1.
Raul Ibanez singled to right and scored Chase Utley in the eighth for a 2-1 cushion.
San Diego starter Mat Latos was sharp in the no-decision, giving up a run and five hits in seven innings.
