The Pittsburgh Pirates committed a pair of errors that led to five unearned runs as the New York Mets battled back to earn an 8-7 victory on Wednesday.
Jose Reyes added a solo homer and Ike Davis doubled in a run for the Mets, who have taken the first three of the four-game set.
Trailing, 5-0, in the fourth after the Pirates had posted four runs in the top of the frame, New York battled right back in the bottom as Carlos Beltran and David Wright began the rally with back-to-back singles. Davis followed with a double to drive in the first run and Nick Evans walked in front of pinch hitter Mike Hessman, who singled to right to make it 5-2.
That’s when the wheels came off for Pittsburgh. Ruben Tejada sent a weak grounder to third baseman Pedro Alvarez, who threw home to try to get the force out with the bases loaded. But catcher Chris Snyder failed to catch the ball cleanly, allowing two more runs to score. Joaquin Arias then sent a grounder to shortstop Ronny Cedeno, who allowed the tying run to score when he couldn’t come up with it.
Angel Pagan drove in two more runs off Paul Maholm (7-15) when he singled to center to cap the big frame.
Raul Valdes (3-3) was credited with the win and Hisanori Takahashi allowed a solo homer in the ninth but escaped further damage for his seventh save.
