Jerry Hairston Jr. got the explosion started with a second-inning grand slam and the San Diego Padres set a Petco Park record for runs scored in a game by routing the New York Mets 18-6 on Monday night.

The Padres scored 17 runs in their home opener against Atlanta to establish the record. They had 19 hits against five New York pitchers to tie the ballpark record for hits they set against the Braves in the April contest.

Chase Headley also homered as part of a performance in which he went 4-for-5 and scored four runs. Chris Denorfia went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs and Nick Hundley went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Adrian Gonzalez reached base four times (two hits, two walks) and scored three runs.

New York’s Rod Barajas hit his team-leading 11th homer of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth that pulled the Mets within 10-6. San Diego responded by putting the game out of reach with six runs in the bottom of the frame.

Padres starter Kevin Correia was again the beneficiary of a big offensive showing. The Padres have scored 55 runs in Correia’s five victories. Correia (5-4) gave up six runs and seven hits in six innings.

Hisanori Takahashi (4-2) was touched up for six runs and eight hits in four innings in his third start. He pitched six shutout innings in each of his first two starts.

The Mets kept the Padres’ onslaught from being even worse by turning four double plays.
