Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks homered to back Chris Capuano and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 on Monday.
Capuano (1-1), making his second start of the year, allowed one run in five innings to a Pirates’ offense that had banged out a combined 36 hits in their last two games. The veteran left-hander struck out four and walked one to win for the first time since May 7, 2007, as injuries have derailed his last three seasons.
Fielder hit his 23rd homer in the fifth inning and Weeks followed with a two-run blast, his 18th, in the sixth.
They were the only runs allowed by Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens (2-5), who gave up three hits in six innings. Karstens has now surrendered 18 homers already to this point.
Brewers closer Jon Axford allowed the first two batters to reach in the ninth before retiring the side for his 12th save in as many opportunities this season.
Ronny Cedeno drove in the Pirates’ lone run with a triple in the fifth that momentarily evened things at 1-1.
