Nate Schierholtz hit a two-run homer and Madison Bumgarner won his third consecutive start as the San Francisco Giants defeated the host Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 on Monday night.
Schierholtz’s homer in the fourth inning gave the Giants a 4-0 lead, which was more than enough of a cushion for Bumgarner, a 20-year-old left-hander making his fifth major league start.
Bumgarner (3-2) held the Dodgers scoreless through five innings before allowing Rafael Furcal’s sixth-inning homer. He lasted 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs – one earned – and six hits.
San Francisco, which has won 11 of its last 14 games, scored twice in the third inning on a run-scoring single by Buster Posey and an RBI-double by Pablo Sandoval.
Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, the Dodgers loaded the bases with two outs but Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt retired Andre Ethier on an infield grounder.
The Dodgers loaded the bases in the ninth against Giants closer Brian Wilson but Wilson fanned Casey Blake for the final out and his 26th save.
Furcal went 3-for-5 while Matt Kemp and Russell Martin each went 3-for-4 for Los Angeles, which dropped its fifth in a row.
Dodgers starter James McDonald (0-1) gave up four runs and nine hits in five innings.
