Russell Martin’s run-scoring single in the top of the 13th inning gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday afternoon.
Martin’s two-out base knock off Miguel Batista (0-2) came after Rafael Furcal singled with two outs. He then stole second and came in to score on the hit to center.
Carlos Monasterios (1-0) got his first Major League victory with solid 2 2/3 solid innings of relief. He escaped trouble in the 13th with runners at second and third and one out, but forced a fielder’s choice groundout and a flyout to end it.
Washington sent the game to extra innings when Nyjer Morgan had an RBI single in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3. Los Angeles had taken a 3-2 lead in the seventh when Casey Blake hit the second of his two homers, a solo shot off starter Craig Stammen.
Blake’s two-run homer in the second had given the Dodgers a 2-1 advantage. The Nationals tied things on Stammen’s RBI single in the sixth.
