The Mets tried to make a late rally, but fell short in an error-filled 10-8 loss to the Florida Marlins on Sunday.

New York dug themselves a deep hole early as starter Jonathon Niese (1-2) gave up five runs – two earned – in two-plus innings. He left in the third with an apparent hamstring injury.

The Marlins put a crooked number in the third inning on the Mets. They scored six runs, aided by throwing errors by David Wright and Niese. Cody Ross had two hits in the innings as 12 Marlins stepped to the plate.

Hisanori Takahashi came in relief of Niese and gave up two runs as well – one in the Marlins’ six-run third and one in the fifth on a Dan Uggla home run.

Florida starter Ricky Nolasco (4-2) was cruising until the sixth. After getting two quick outs Nolasco gave up four consecutive hits, the final being a two-run double by David Wright that cut the lead to 7-3.

Nolasco left after six, giving up two earned runs (three total) on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

An Alex Cora double in the seventh off Florida reliever Chris Leroux brought the Mets within one, but that was as close as they would get.

Chris Coghlan countered in the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit three-run blast off Manny Acosta to make it 10-6, restoring Florida’s four-run lead.

The Mets tacked on a run in both the eighth and ninth but Leo Nunez was able to shut the door for his ninth save of the season, finishing Florida's first four-game sweep of the Mets since August 2006.

The Mets head to Atlanta next for a two-game set with the Braves, while Florida will host Arizona for a pair.
