Mike Leake continued his impressive rookie campaign by giving up just one run and scattering seven hits over seven innings for the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night for a 5-1 win over the Washington Nationals.
Leake improved to 5-0 on the season and threw another strong game. He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter as Cincinnati rebounded from a frustrating 4-2 loss in Friday’s opener.
The Reds got RBI doubles from Joey Votto in the first and Orlando Cabrera in the fifth against Luis Atilano (5-2) for a 2-0 lead. Washington later scored in the sixth on first baseman Votto’s fielding error to make it 2-1, but the Reds broke it open in the eighth.
Brandon Phillips added an RBI single in the eighth and later scored on a fielder’s choice. Jay Bruce completed the three-run inning with an RBI single to give the Reds a 5-1 lead.
The Nationals wasted Atilano’s good effort as he gave up two runs on six hits in seven innings. Defense didn’t help Washington as the team made three errors that led to two runs.
