Chris Young’s two-run single in the fourth inning was the decisive hit as the Arizona Diamondbacks recovered from an early deficit to record an 8-4 victory over the visiting Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.
Young’s hit culminated a rally from a four-run deficit and gave the Diamondbacks a 5-4 lead. Arizona’s bullpen allowed just two hits over the final four innings to drop the Rockies three games behind the San Diego Padres in the NL West race.
Colorado scored four times in the first inning on Melvin Mora’s three-run homer and Todd Helton’s solo shot.
Arizona got one run back in the first on Stephen Drew’s homer. Adam LaRoche pulled the Diamondbacks within one run at 4-3 with a two-run homer in the third off Ubaldo Jimenez.
The Diamondbacks tallied three times in the eighth, two coming on Kelly Johnson’s homer to right.
Jimenez (19-7) lasted just four innings, giving up five runs and five hits. He struck out six.
Rodrigo Lopez (7-14) gave up four runs and five hits in five innings. Four Arizona relievers blanked Colorado the remainder of the game with Sam Demel getting the final five outs for his second save.
