Jerry Hairston Jr. hit the go-ahead single in the seventh inning as the San Diego Padres extended Tampa Bay's recent struggles Wednesday night with a 5-4 win over the Rays.

After the Rays erased a 3-0 deficit with a three-run sixth, the Padres went back in front for good the following inning. Scott Hairston opened with a single and went to second on a James Shields balk. Jerry Hairston singled two outs later, bringing home his younger brother with the winning run.

The Padres extended the lead with a run in the ninth before the Rays got it back after Jason Bartlett scored on a Chase Headley throwing error. Evan Longoria came up with a chance to tie the game, but he struck out swinging to end it.

Luke Gregerson (2-2) earned the victory in relief, allowing a run over 1 1/3 innings but striking out four. San Diego starter Kevin Correia went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

James Shields (6-7) surrendered four runs on six hits over seven innings, losing his sixth consecutive start. He walked one and struck out seven, but allowed homers to Adrian Gonzalez and Will Venable.

B.J. Upton had two hits, two stolen bases and an RBI for Tampa Bay, which has dropped nine of 12.
