Evan Longoria hit a two-run double in the sixth inning and Matt Garza won a duel with Dallas Braden as the Tampa Bay Rays earned a 3-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon at Oakland Coliseum.
The Rays (76-48) earned a split of the spirited four-game series – all the games were decided by one run - and stayed one game behind the American League East-leading New York Yankees.
Garza (13-7) gave up one run on four hits in 7 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and three walks. Joaquin Benoit got the final out of the eighth and Rafael Soriano allowed an RBI double by Gabe Gross in the ninth before getting his 37th save.
In the sixth, Jason Bartlett walked and Carl Crawford singled before Longoria's double against Braden (8-9) broke a 1-1 tie.
Braden allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings. He had thrown a perfect game in his last outing against the A's on May 9.
Kelly Shoppach gave the Rays a 1-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI double.
Oakland (61-62) scored in the fifth inning when Luke Powell singled and eventually came home on Garza's balk.
