Cliff Pennington went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run single during Oakland’s seven-run seventh inning, as the host Athletics defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-4 on Friday night.
The A’s led 5-4 entering the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Sweeney doubled in the first run of the inning before Pennington’s two-run single to right field gave Oakland a four-run lead.
Gabe Gross and Daric Barton added run-scoring singles in the inning with the final two runs scoring on a wild pitch and an infield groundout.
Coco Crisp went 3-for-5 and scored three runs for Oakland, which had 17 hits while handing the Pirates their 15th consecutive road loss. Sweeney went 3-for-5.
Oakland starter Ben Sheets (3-7) struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter in six innings while recording his first victory since May 8. Sheets gave up four runs and eight hits.
Pittsburgh’s Brad Lincoln (0-2) gave up five runs – three earned – and eight hits in six innings.
Neil Walker went 3-for-4 with a homer for the Pirates.
