Jered Weaver pitched into the seventh inning and Mike Napoli’s homer proved to be the difference as the Los Angeles Angels held on for a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday.
Torii Hunter also homered and Hideki Matsui drove in two runs for the Angels, who finished 11-3 on their longest road trip since 2002.
Weaver (6-3) allowed three runs and five hits in six-plus innings. He struck out seven and walked one.
The Angels, however, nearly squandered a three-run lead after Weaver was lifted.
James Loney’s RBI double off Weaver cut the lead to 5-2, and Blake DeWitt added an RBI single off Kevin Jepsen.
Napoli’s 10th homer of the season in the eighth restored the three-run lead. It proved to be a crucial one, too, as the Dodgers rallied in the bottom half of the frame.
Loney’s two-run double off Fernando Rodney cut the lead to 6-5. But Rodney struck out Ronnie Belliard and got Reed Johnson to pop up, ending the threat.
Brian Fuentes then worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth for his 10th save in 13 chances.
Hunter’s 10th homer of the season off Carlos Monasterios (3-1) gave the Angels a 3-1 lead. Howie Kendrick had an RBI double later in the frame, and Matsui’s run-scoring single in the fifth made it 5-1.
Monasterios (3-1), who made his fifth start in place of the injured Vicente Padilla, allowed four runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.
