Torii Hunter hit two home runs and drove in seven runs, tying a career high, as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim routed the visiting Kansas City Royals 11-0 on Sunday night to avoid a three-game series sweep.
Hunter, who was chosen to his fourth All-Star Game earlier Sunday, hit a three-run homer in the third inning off Anthony Lerew (1-2) and a two-run blast in the seventh. He added a two-run single in the eighth.
Hunter, who has 14 homers, is the team’s only representative in the All-Star Game, which the Angels will host on July 13.
Joel Pineiro (9-6) won his sixth consecutive start, pitching seven shutout innings and allowing six hits. He walked four and had three strikeouts.
Francisco Rodriguez and Fernando Rodney each pitched one inning of one-hit relief.
Lerew allowed six runs on six hits in five innings for the Royals, who were trying for their first three-game series sweep and first four-game winning streak of the season.
In his major league debut, Paul McAnulty hit a two-run homer in the sixth for the Angels, who have not been swept for 78 consecutive series at home.
