Kyle Davies carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Billy Butler homered as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Seattle Mariners, 3-1, on Monday.
Davies (2-1) struck out five and walked three, allowing just the one hit over six innings.
He was perfect the first time through the order before walking Scott Podsednik to start the fourth. Seattle loaded the bases against him in the sixth on a pair of walks and a single from Ichiro Suzuki that broke up the no-hit bid, but Jose Lopez flied to center to end the threat.
Bruce Chen earned his first save of the campaign when he got Suzuki to fly out to center with the tying runs on base to end the game. Kyle Farnsworth tried subbing for closer Joakim Soria, who had pitched on consecutive days, but Farnsworth ran into trouble when Milton Bradley doubled, Rob Johnson walked and Mike Sweeney singled home Bradley to get within two and forcing Chen into action.
Seattle starter Felix Hernandez (2-1) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on an RBI single to Jose Guillen in the first and a groundout that scored Mitch Maier in the fourth. Butler homered off the right-hander in the seventh to help send the Mariners to their fourth straight loss.
