Brennan Boesch’s first career homer was a grand slam and Austin Jackson went 5-for-5 at the plate as the Detroit Tigers earned a 10-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.
Boesch and Scott Sizemore became the first rookie teammates in eight years to hit their first career homers in the same inning. The last pair to do it, according to STATS, was Cleveland’s Victor Martinez and Earl Snyder in 2002.
The duo and Gerald Laird all homered in the fourth as Detroit scored eight runs to blow the game open against Los Angeles starter Joel Pineiro.
Jackson singled five times to raise his batting average to .364 and scored a pair of runs.
Detroit starter Rick Porcello (2-2) struggled, but benefitted from the offensive in allowing five runs in 5 1/3 innings.
The Angels built a 4-1 advantage in large part to Torii Hunter’s three-run homer in the third.
Pineiro (2-3) was rocked for 10 runs -- nine earned -- over 3 1/3 innings.
