Travis Hafner hit a grand slam in his return from the disabled list and Chone Figgins’ fielding error led to a seven-run seventh inning in the Cleveland Indians’ 9-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

The teams traded zeroes over the first six innings. Seattle starter Felix Hernandez retired the first two batters in the seventh, but Figgins bobbled Luis Valbuena’s grounder to second and Valbuena beat the throw.

The Indians followed with three consecutive hits and a walk before Hafner, activated from the DL with shoulder soreness earlier in the day, hit his 11th career grand slam. It was Hafner’s 10th homer of the season and first since July 26.

Justin Masterson allowed one hit in six shutout innings, but walked six. He worked out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the fifth and Tony Sipp (2-2) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the victory.

Jayson Nix and Michael Brantley also homered for the Indians, who scored all their runs in the seventh and eighth innings and won for the second time in eight games.

Hernandez (8-10) didn’t allow an earned run for a second straight start, but the Mariners again struggled scoring with their ace on the mound. Franklin Gutierrez beat out an infield single in the eighth to score Seattle’s only run and avoid being shut out for the third time in Hernandez’s last four starts.

The Mariners have scored a total of eight runs in his last seven outings.
