Yuniesky Betancourt’s two-run double capped a five-run ninth inning as the Kansas City Royals rallied for an 8-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.
Cleveland closer Kerry Wood (0-2) was drilled for all five runs in the ninth, allowing four hits and walking two in just 1/3 of an inning.
Trailing by a run entering their final at-bats, the Royals got an RBI double from Billy Butler to even the score and went ahead on Mitch Maier’s bases-loaded walk. Betancourt then brought in two more to end the onslaught.
Bruce Chen (1-0) was credited with the win, working 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Indians tied things in the sixth on Jason Donald’s groundout to the shortstop and went ahead 4-3 an inning later when Travis Hafner singled in a run.
Cleveland played without All-Star centerfielder Grady Sizemore, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee contusion earlier in the day.
