Derek Jeter's check-swing roller eluded both Jonathan Papelbon and infielder Bill Hall to allow Brett Gardner to score from second base with the go-ahead run as the New York Yankees recorded a 6-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Jeter was credited with an infield hit on the play and Hall was charged with an error.

Robinson Cano homered and drove in a pair of runs for New York.

Andy Pettitte started and was shaky again for the Yankees. He lasted just four-plus innings, allowing nine hits and two walks. He struck out eight and surrendered three runs.

Eric Patterson scored Boston's second run of the game on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to tie the game at 5-5. Josh Reddick was thrown out at the plate while trying to score the go-ahead run on the wild pitch by Kerry Wood.

Papelbon (5-7) took the loss for the Red Sox.

Phil Hughes (18-8) got the win in relief and Mariano Rivera recorded his 33rd save of the season.

The Red Sox honored the retiring Mike Lowell before the game. Lowell had two hits, including a two-run double in the first inning.
