Felix Hernandez turned in his second consecutive dominant performance as the Seattle Mariners topped the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Wednesday night to avoid a three-game series sweep.

Hernandez (10-10) allowed two runs - one earned - on four hits in 7 1/3 innings to get back to the .500 mark and give the Mariners a split of the day-night doubleheader.

The 24-year-old right-hander also had nine strikeouts and became the fourth-youngest pitcher to reach 1,000 for his career when he got David Ortiz swinging in the sixth inning. He went eight scoreless innings against the New York Yankees in his last start.

Jose Lopez had two hits and drove in a pair of runs as the Mariners ended a four-game losing streak. J.D. Drew homered for Boston, which had its win streak snapped at four games.

Matt Tuiasosopo had three hits and an RBI double to help Seattle complete its season-high 12-game road trip with a 6-6 mark.

Tim Wakefield (3-10), making his first start since July 20, allowed four runs - three earned - on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.

The 43-year-old knuckleballer started in place of Jon Lester, who was pushed back to Friday because Daisuke Matsuzaka is dealing with an ailing back.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona and third baseman Adrian Beltre were both ejected in the third inning for arguing balls and strikes.
