Matt Garza continued his mastery of the Boston Red Sox as the Tampa Bay Rays posted a 9-4 win at over their division rivals on Wednesday night.
Garza improved to 7-3 lifetime against Boston and lowered his career ERA at Fenway Park to 2.93. Garza (9-5) went seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits.
The Rays took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning when Kelly Shoppach hit a two-run double and Ben Zobrist had an RBI single.
Boston closed the gap to 3-1 in the sixth on an RBI double by David Ortiz. But the Rays broke things open against the Boston bullpen with six runs in the eighth. Manny Delcarmen did not record an out and was charged with five runs.
Carlos Pena had an RBI double to make it 4-1, Sean Rodriguez bounced one through the drawn-in infield with the bases loaded to score a pair and Jason Bartlett followed two batters later with a three-run homer.
Boston scored three times in the bottom of the eighth as Ortiz had a two-run double and Adrian Beltre had a sacrifice fly.
Daisuke Matsuzaka (5-3) battled controls problems again despite striking out seven. He walked four and allowed three runs on four hits in six innings to take the loss.
