Daisuke Matsuzaka carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning before settling for a one-hit gem as the Boston Red Sox scored four runs in the fifth and cruised to a 5-0 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

Juan Castro broke up the no-hit bid with two outs in the eighth with a bloop single that fell just over the glove of shortstop Marco Scutaro in shallow left field. Castro was playing in place of injured shortstop Jimmy Rollins.

Adrian Beltre belted a two-run double, David Ortiz added a run-scoring double and J.D. Drew had an RBI single for the Red Sox (23-21), who have won four of their last five games.

Matsuzaka (3-1) exited after finishing the eighth inning. He walked four and struck out five to drop his ERA from a mountainous 7.89 to 5.76 following this contest.

The last Boston no-hitter was thrown by Jon Lester against the Kansas City Royals on May 19, 2008. As well the last time Philadelphia was no-hit was April 16, 1978 by St. Louis Cardinals hurler Bob Forsch.

Daniel Bard retired the side in the ninth to preserve the victory for the Red Sox, who rebounded from a 5-1 setback in the series opener on Friday.

Kyle Kendrick (2-2) allowed five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings for the National League-leading Phillies (26-16), who fell to 14-6 in the month of May.
