Clay Buchholz pitched eight strong innings and David Ortiz homered to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.

Ortiz hit his eighth home run of the year in the fourth inning to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. Umpires originally ruled that the ball hit high off the left-field wall and bounced back into play as Ortiz was able to reach third base on the play.

The umpires reversed the call on instant replay, rewarding the slugger with the home run.

Buchholz (5-3) allowed two runs on five hits while striking out seven on 107 pitches.

Minnesota took a 1-0 in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Joe Mauer, scoring Denard Span who also had doubled.

Bill Hall had an RBI single in the sixth to give Boston a 3-1 lead.

The Twins got a run in the ninth to make things interesting. Span led off the inning with an infield hit that chased Buchholz.

Daniel Bard came on in relief and allowed another hit and a walk before getting Jim Thome to ground out to second with runners on first and second base to end the game for his first save of the season.

Minnesota starter Scott Baker (4-4) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings to take the loss.
