Garrett Atkins had a two-run single that sparked a four-run sixth inning and closer Mike Gonzalez did better the second time around as the Orioles earned their first win with a 5-4 victory over the Rays Thursday night. The Orioles trailed 2-1 after five innings and seemed to be on the verge of wasting a pretty good effort from starter Brian Matusz. But they rallied in the sixth, tying the game on a Matt Wieters single and going ahead on a wild pitch. Atkins then lined a two-run single to right for a 5-2 lead. Tampa Bay got runs in the seventh and eighth before Gonzalez came on in the ninth. He blew the save Tuesday and got the first two batters in this one before the Rays loaded the bases. But Gonzalez got Ben Zobrist to fly out to end it. Matusz (1-0) struggled at times during his five-inning stint. He walked five – three in the two-run third inning – before settling down to strike out seven and giving up just two runs on two hits. Nolan Reimold helped the cause earlier in the game with his first homer of the season. Atkins, Wieters and Brian Roberts all pitched in with two hits apiece. Mike Ekstrom (0-1) allowed three runs in 1/3 of an inning to take the loss.
