J.D. Martinez homered twice among his four hits to lead the host Boston Red Sox past the Los Angeles Angels 16-4 on Friday night.

Martinez also doubled twice and had four RBIs, and Mookie Betts crushed a tiebreaking two-run home run in the fifth inning as Boston overcame an early three-run deficit to win consecutive games for the first time since July 26-27.

Marcus Walden (7-1) got the victory as part of a bullpen game, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Five Red Sox pitchers combined to hold the Angels to one hit the rest of the way after Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer with two outs in the first. Los Angeles dropped its eighth consecutive game.

After Betts put the Red Sox up 5-3 with a full-count homer pulled over the Green Monster in left field, Boston put the game away with a five-run sixth inning.

Two runs scored on a Jackie Bradley Jr. grounder that second baseman Luis Rengifo committed a fielding error on instead of turning a potential inning-ending double play, and Rafael Devers added two more on a bases-loaded single.

The Angels got back on the board on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to make it 10-4 before Martinez's second blast kicked off a two-run bottom of the inning for the Red Sox.

Devers and Mitch Moreland added solo homers in a four-run eighth.

Los Angeles had taken a 3-0 lead in the first on Pujols' homer after Justin Upton walked on what appeared to be strike three. Boston began chipping away in the bottom of the inning when Martinez doubled home Betts, who had led off with a double.

Martinez then knotted the score at 3 when he crushed a pitch from Jaime Barria the opposite way to right field in the fourth for a two-run blast.

Barria (4-6) suffered his third straight loss in addition to giving up a homer for the eighth consecutive start. He allowed five runs on six hits over five innings, striking out three.
