Jose Ramirez belted a two-run homer in the seventh inning as the host Cleveland Indians recorded a 2-0 victory over the Texas Rangers in the opening game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

Mike Freeman and Carlos Santana each had a single for the Indians, who mustered just three hits en route to posting their 17th win in 23 games.

Nick Goody (3-0) allowed one hit and struck out three batters in two innings of relief of rookie Zach Plesac to bridge the gap to closer Brad Hand. Hand fanned Hunter Pence, Rougned Odor and Logan Forsythe on 13 pitches in the ninth to secure his 28th save of the season.

Santana ripped a single to right field off Ariel Jurado (6-7) to lead off the seventh inning. After a Yasiel Puig strikeout, Ramirez deposited a 2-0 fastball well over the wall in right field for his 15th homer of the season -- his 10th since July 4.

Forsythe collected a pair of hits and Delino DeShields had a double for the Rangers, who were thwarted in their bid for a season high-tying sixth straight win. They won six in a row from June 22-28.

Jurado carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before surrendering a two-out single to Freeman. The 23-year-old permitted two runs on three hits in a career high-tying seven innings. He lasted seven innings in a pair of starts this season, including an 11-3 win at Oakland on July 25.

Plesac received a no-decision despite scattering five hits and striking out a career high-tying seven batters over six scoreless innings. The 24-year-old exited after tossing 106 pitches.

Texas right fielder Nomar Mazara went 0-for-4 with a strikeout to see his eight-game hitting streak come to a halt.

The Rangers will send right-hander Lance Lynn (14-6, 3.71 ERA) to pitch the nightcap against Cleveland, which has elected to utilize a bullpen game. That decision allows the Indians to use right-hander Mike Clevinger in the opener of Thursday's pivotal four-game series against American League Central-leading Minnesota at Target Field.
